~ Fascinating Facts on Fear ~

PHOBUS
God of Fear
(Greco-Roman mosaic from Halicarnassus C4th AD, British Museum)

1. All fear arises from an expectation of pain or suffering.

2. Common fears are arachnophobia (fear of spiders), social phobia (fears involving social situations), fear of flying, agoraphobia (fear of having a panic attack in a setting from which there is no easy escape), claustrophobia (fear of being trapped in a confined space), acrophobia (fear of heights), ophidiophobia (fear of snakes), fear of being buried alive, emetophobia (fear of vomit), carcinophobia (fear of cancer), brontophobia (fear of thunderstorms), necrophobia (fear of death or of dead things).

3. A 1999 report on mental health by the US Surgeon General estimated about 7% of Americans suffer from a social phobia (anxiety and self-consciousness in social settings). A more recent report by the US National Institute of Mental Health put the figure at just under 4%.

4. In a telephone study of 1,000 American adults done recently by marketing research group Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates, 7 % of Americans said they suffered from a phobia and nearly 40% confessed an extreme fear of an object or situation.

5. Fear lives only in the future. When confronted by fear, ask yourself, "Am I afraid of something that is happening right now?"

6. Fear is just another emotion.

7. Fear is always about loss (of life, money, respect etc).

8. Fear is present only when there is a desire or expectations. If you think in terms of the way your life should be, you are opening the door to fears.

9. When a person feels fear, the eyes widen (out of anticipation for what will happen next), the pupils dilate (to take in more light), the upper lip rises, the brows draw together, and the lips stretch horizontally.
10. Fear and risk are closely related. Deborah Lupton wrote in her book Risk (1999), risk "has come to stand as one of the focal points of feelings of fear, anxiety and uncertainty". In his book Folk Devils and Moral Panics (2002), Stanley Cohen says, "Reflections on risk are now absorbed into a wider culture of insecurity, victimization and fear."

11. The Indian sage Jiddu Krishnamurti said, "Why should one be afraid of the unknown, when you know nothing about it?"

12. Phobus was the Greek god of panic, flight and battlefield rout. His twin brother Deimos was the god of fear, dread and terror. This happy pair were sons of Ares, the god of war, and accompanied their father into battle, driving his chariot and spreading fear in their wake. Their mother was Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and in relation to her the twins represented fear of loss.

13. Fear of the number 13 is called triskaidekaphobia (from Greek tris=three, kai=and, deka=ten).

Heaven and Hell

Current mood: hopeful
Category: Life
Received this story from a Plaxo friend today. It couldn't have come at a better time -- cool how that happens, huh?

There was a Saint who had a vision about what it was like in Hell & Heaven.

In Hell he saw a huge table laden with food in the centre. Surrounding the table were starving people who all had very long forks attached to the ends of their arms. They could stab the food, but the forks were too long for them to put the food in their mouths. They were all screaming in frustration as they tried to eat the food that they longed for.

In Heaven, the saint saw the exact same table laden with food & people with the long forks at the ends of their arms. However, here the people were all smiling & enjoying the food. What they were doing was stabbing the food & putting it in EACH OTHER'S mouths!

The moral of the story is that our heaven & hell is right here on earth. How much we want to help others & be helped in return is what makes the difference.

One's wealth is not measured by what they HAVE, but rather by what they GIVE.

Made me think of a song written and recorded by my friend Clint. Hope you like it!

Heroes

HEROES...

August 2, 2009....

I was updating my profile on MySpace and ended up on a road of thought more blog appropriate… so a quick cut and paste, and voila… a blog entry which I will maintain as “Heroes” as that is where it started. Happy reading… and please toss in your take. I welcome your comments! ....

My heroes are Andre Agassi, Elton John, Neil Young, Johnny Depp, Clint Crisher, Lenny Kravitz, Gavin DeGraw... and anyone being authentic. (Guess I'm boy crazy for artist types!) What is a hero? Someone who comes to your rescue? Someone you admire? ....

I have a select list of favorite people I keep close to my heart. Each of them has been a hero of sorts to me by the influence their presence made or continually makes in my life.....

Maybe we're our own hero. In order to fully love another we must fully love and trust ourselves. That's a lot of responsibility! Communication is key and it sucks when you find yourself well into reflexive behavior you don't understand and by the time you realize it has already triggered your loved one's auto pilot defenses and the two of you have spiraled into a messy, ugly and painful state of confusion. Unconscious measurements and reflexive conditioning are biggies to overcome, but you have to if you really want to cover ground in this lifetime and experience fierce love. ....

It’s hard to dial into the subconscious so I tend to “love and clean,” Hehe, anyone who knows me can vouch for this irritating behavior. I can’t believe I’m going there… Oh well… So, it’s really simple. I embrace my vibrant heart that’s exuding love while I literally wipe away the accumulation (or list) of defenses, triggers, behaviors and unhealthy thinking I have developed or picked up along the way. I try to picture the page or white board or my mind ‘wiped clean’ of past scribbles leaving a blank slate which will allow me to be wide open and free to experience the now. Hehe! Of course some past entries must have been written with Sharpies and others with invisible ink or like hocus pocus is at play, but I'm not giving up. I've come too far and tomorrow I get to try again. Even if I fall flat on my head, I’m paying attention and have learned to laugh at myself. We mustn’t take ourselves too seriously and it’s important we maintain our sense of humor. Equally vital is that we recognize that nothing is permanent and therefore nothing warrants reaction. We could blame others or beat ourselves up or build walls to camouflage self perceived inadequacies, but none of “it” is real. All that exists is how we choose to perceive and interpret “it” and “it” quite probably doesn’t exist or as I say, “it’s a lie.” Unless “it's” life threatening, well, actually even so, our reaction is just that, not the cause so therefore we can't modify the effect. We can get tangled up and cause a stadium wave of reaction, but the situation remains the same, effect as well. ....

Basically, there are 3 parts to every interaction: 1/3 belongs to YOU: your mood, opinion, attitude, stomach growling, mind wandering, unconscious conditioning… etc., the 2nd 1/3 belongs to THE OTHER PARTY: their values, mood, opinion, distraction of playing back earlier fight with spouse during their conversation with you, etc…. Do you follow? And the final 1/3 is SURROUNDINGS: the powers at play – the universe, the situation, circumstances, weather, fire alarm sounding, energy in the room, time, traffic, hail storm… I hope you catch my drift! ALL THAT YOU AFFECT (or have any say about) is the 1/3 that belongs to YOU. But even if you’re in a great mood and on top of the world, the OTHER PARTY and/or SURROUNDINGS may present and trigger unconscious measurements and reflexive conditioning causing you to REACT and alas, we come full circle. Whew, I really hope this makes sense. I tried to get it all down in a comprehensive manner, which was challenging considering the way that I have it sorted in my mind. ....

Like I said, this started as an update to my Myspace and before I knew it all of this came spilling out of me. I’ve been on this personal journey of discovery for a while and I will say that it sucks and hurts like hell looking back at things I handled poorly or people I may have hurt with my fear, but I am a human being and I know my intention is only that of love. Actually, no regrets and not taking things personally are other topics to fill a page, maybe next time. Back to my exercise of ‘love and clean,’ basically it’s my way of saying STOP (to myself) when old thinking enters my mind or I begin feeling unsettled. As silly as it sounds, these are big fish I’m frying and I cannot express enough how rewarding it has been thus far. …I’m not sure how to close this, so I think I won’t. When more comes to me I will simply continue. Until then, stay loving and enjoy every minute! If things get tangled, there is always music to soothe your soul!....
